Explained: Why Mumbai Indians Got Eliminated From IPL 2024 After Sunrisers Hyderabad Thrashed Lucknow Super Giants

May 09,2024

Mumbai Indians on Wednesday became the first team to be knocked out of the playoffs race in IPL 2024 after Sunrisers Hyderabad thrashed Lucknow Super Giants by 10 wickets in the Match No. 57 of the ongoing tournament.

Chasing a modest target of 166, openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma hammered LSG bowlers all around the park.

Both Head (89 not out, 30b) and Abhishek (75 not out, 28b) slammed attacking fifties as Sunrisers Hyderabad raced past the target in just 9.4 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

With their dominating 10-wicket win over LSG, SRH jumped to third place with 14 points, behind Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals who have 16 points each.

With LSG and Delhi Capitals playing each other on May 14, one of those teams will certainly get to 14 points.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians, who already have 8 losses to their name, can only get to 12 maximum points if they win their remaining two league games. So, it's clear that Mumbai Indians will not make the cut-off to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs.

Ahead of the start of the IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians had appointed Hardik Pandya as their new skipper, replacing Rohit Sharma.

The franchise had high hopes from Hardik since he led Gujarat Titans to their first title in IPL 2022. However, the star all-rounder failed to deliver as new Mumbai Indians skipper.

When it comes to his own performance, Hardik has had a poor season so far, scoring only 198 runs in 11 innings, and taking 11 wickets with an economy rate of 10.58.

Jasprit Bumrah has been MI leading performer with the ball, topping the wicket charts after 12 games with 18 wickets and an economy of 6.20.

On the other hand, Tilak Varma is their highest scorer with 384 runs at an average of 42.66, with Suryakumar Yadav second with 334 in nine innings.

Former MI captain Rohit Sharma has managed only 330 runs in 12 innings. He has struggled badly in his last five innings.

Five times champions MI will face KKR in the next game at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata before ending their campaign against LSG on May 17.
