Midas Hospital Team Performs Life-Saving Endoscopic Procedure to Remove Ingested Razor Blade

Nagpur: "Senior gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Mukewar, along with a team of specialists at Midas Hospital, successfully performed a complex endoscopic procedure to remove a razor blade from a patients esophagus (food pipe) who had ingested it approximately two weeks prior to seeking treatment.

The 40-year-old male patient, who has a 15-year history of schizophrenia, was admitted to Midas Hospital with complaints of difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) that had persisted for nearly a week. Upon admission and evaluation, an endoscopy revealed a full-thickness perforation (hole) in the patient's food pipe (oesophagus).

Dr. Mukewar and the endoscopy team performed a delicate procedure on March 8th, during which they advanced the endoscope inside the esophagus and carefully extracted the razor blade, which had been in the patient's system for over two weeks. The blade was removed entirely out of the esophagus and the hole in the esophagus closed with a metal stent.  

The hospital's multidisciplinary approach included psychiatric consultation to address the patient's underlying mental health condition. The psychiatric evaluation confirmed delusions of reference and persecution with auditory hallucinations, along with psychotic depression. Medical professionals determined that the blade ingestion was likely related to auditory hallucinations rather than suicidal intent.

"This case presented several complex challenges, including the management of both the physical trauma of the foreign body and the need for sensitive psychiatric care," said Dr. Saurabh Mukewar. "Our team's coordinated efforts allowed us to successfully remove the foreign object while providing comprehensive care for the patient's overall health needs."

The patient has responded well to treatment and is now able to tolerate oral nutrition. He has been discharged in stable condition and will continue with appropriate medical management.
