Anupam Kher has resigned as the chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India due to his commitments to an international TV show ‘New Amsterdam‘ for which he has to be in the US.

In his resignation letter to Information and Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, he said that due to his commitment to the American show he needs to be stationed in the US for “nearly nine months between 2018 and 2019 and then for a similar period for a minimum of three years more”.

“Given this assignment, it would not be fair to me, the students and management team, for me to hold a position of such responsibility and accountability, without being actively involved in the operations,” he added in his resignation letter.

Accepting Kher’s resignation, Rathore, thanked him for his services to the premier institute.

Anupam had taken over as the chairman on October 11, 2017, and his tenure lasted just over a year.

New Amsterdam is an American medical drama, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, and started airing from September 25.
