Manipur Violence: Amit Shah Holds Talks With Members of Kuki, Meitei And Other Groups, Announces Compensation

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday reviewed the security situation in ethnic violence-hit Manipur and held talks with Kuki civil society leaders Meitei groups and other stake holders.

Amit Shah visited Churachandpur, one of the areas severely affected by the ethnic violence, and held talks with Kuki civil society leaders, Meitei groups, women groups and prominent personalities to take a stock of the ground reality.

Singh, accompanied by Intelligence Bureau chief and Union Home Secretary, held three rounds of discussions with Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) and other civil society organisations.

He also held talks with the five Kuki MLAs from the BJP.

The Union Home Minister reached Manipur Monday night to talk with the stake holders and understand people's grievances and find ways to bring peace to Manipur, which has witnessed a series of deadly clashes between Meiteis and Kukis.

"Reviewed the security situation in Manipur at a meeting with senior officials of the Manipur Police, CAPFs and the Indian Army in Imphal. Peace and prosperity of Manipur is our top priority, and I instructed them to strictly deal with any activities disturbing peace," Amit Shah tweeted after the meetings.

Amit Shah announced the Centre would be sending more troops to Manipur to maintain law and order in the state. He assured of expediting the relief measures and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and a job to one of the family members of the victims of those who died in the ethnic conflict.

The Union Home Minister also held a meeting with a group of women leaders (Meira Paibi) in Manipur.

Commenting on the outcome of his meeting with Amit Shah, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) coordinator Jeetendra Ningomba said during the discussions they requested the Union Home Minister for "immediate abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Kuki militant groups and devise effective counter-terror actions.

Ningomba said they also asked Shah to replace Assam Rifles for their "softness towards the Kukis."

Manipur has been hit by deadly ethnic conflict for nearly a month. The death toll from clashes has gone up to 80.
