February 24,2026

Nagpur : Doctors at Max Hospital, Nagpur, have successfully treated a 39-year-old woman with advanced and aggressive ovarian cancer using a complex multimodal treatment approach. The patient had a large pelvic tumor with cancer spread across the abdomen, an advanced condition that requires highly specialized surgical expertise and coordinated cancer care.

The patient, a resident of Nagpur and a homemaker with no family history of cancer, had been experiencing intermittent abdominal pain for nearly a month. She initially consulted a gynecologist, who advised an ultrasound examination. The scan revealed a serious abnormality, following which she was referred to Max Hospital, Nagpur, for specialized evaluation and treatment.

On detailed assessment, doctors at Max Hospital, Nagpur, identified a large pelvic tumor measuring approximately 12 × 10 × 8 cm—nearly the size of a cricket ball—along with multiple cancer deposits spread throughout the abdomen, indicating advanced-stage ovarian cancer for which initial chemotherapy was given. Considering the extent and aggressiveness of the disease, the medical team decided to proceed with a highly complex surgical intervention.

The surgery was led by Dr. Abhinav Deshpande, Director – Surgical Oncology & Robotic Oncosurgery, Max Hospital, Nagpur, and involved an extensive cancerous tumor removal procedure followed by a specialized chemotherapy technique.

Explaining the procedure in simple terms, Dr. Deshpande said, “The surgery involved removal of the large abdominal tumor along with the uterus, both ovaries, lymph nodes, appendix, and the peritoneum—the protective lining of the abdomen—to remove all visible cancer. This was followed by HIPEC, a specialized technique in which heated chemotherapy is circulated inside the abdomen during surgery to destroy any microscopic cancer cells that may remain.”

Despite the complexity and duration of the surgery, the patient’s post-operative recovery was smooth and uneventful. She gradually regained strength under close medical supervision and was successfully discharged on the seventh day after surgery.

Dr. Deshpande further added, “Earlier, such aggressive and widespread disease was often considered inoperable. However, advancements in surgical techniques, anesthesia, and critical care now allow us to manage these complex cases with improved safety and better outcomes.”

Following surgery, the patient will undergo adjuvant chemotherapy as part of the comprehensive treatment plan. With combined approach of surgery and chemotherapy the patient has a strong chance of long-term disease control and recovery.

Ovarian cancer often presents with vague and easily overlooked symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis. This case highlights the importance of not ignoring persistent abdominal pain or discomfort and seeking timely medical consultation. The successful outcome also reinforces Max Hospital, Nagpur’s expertise in delivering advanced cancer care through a multidisciplinary approach, state-of-the-art technology, and skilled medical teams—bringing hope to patients even in the most complex cancer scenarios.
